Equipment

To join the link, you need a wireless antenna on your roof, connected to a small black box which acts as the power supply and is wired to your computer.

We install the wireless equipment for £100 + VAT (although the equipment and install often costs us more than that).

The antenna is a white box less than a foot square (we use various models). It is mounted on your roof, often on the same pole as your TV antenna, or your house wall (if you are close to one of the base stations).

The power supply is a black box about 3-4 inches long, and can be up to 50 metres from the antenna.

The computer cable is standard Cat 5 networking cable (about the same size as telephone cable). If you want to run multiple computers, all wired to the Internet, you need to buy an Ethernet Switch - this is a bit like a multi-way adapter - it is a small box which requires power, and has multiple Ethernet sockets on the back - you wire one to the black box, and the others to your computers.

If you have a wireless laptop, and don't want to plug it in to our box to connect to the Internet, you can purchase your own Wireless Access Point (which has to run on a different channel to the broadband connection). You plug the access point into our box, set it up to use a different channel, and away you go. Full instructions on how to install a Wireless Access point.

If you want to use both wired (to a desktop) and wireless (to a laptop) connections at the same time, you buy an Ethernet Switch - this is a bit like a multi-way adapter - you plug a cable from our black box to the switch, then cables from the switch to the wireless access point, and from the switch to each of your desktop computers. Full instructions on how to install an Ethernet Switch.

Switches and wireless access points are available from Micro Plus.
